ユーカリの葉はかなり強い毒が含まれている。
そのため、それを赤子の頃から主食としているコアラどもは常に酩酊している。
いちど、研究者がコアラをユーカリ以外の食品で飼育したことがあった。

するとコアラは実にアグレッシブな動物に成長し、軽快なフットワークと電光のような動きで飼育係を翻弄したという。
